Evidence-based research with
real-world impact

The BEAM Lab is a research hub focused on eating disorders, body image, and embodiment, centring the lived and living experiences of people whose relationships with their bodies have been shaped by trauma, stigma, and systemic pressures. Our work aims to advance understanding of these experiences and to identify pathways toward healing and greater compassion.

Through rigorous, ethically grounded research, we seek to build evidence that supports safer, more inclusive systems of care. Our long-term goal is to reduce harm and marginalisation and to promote dignity across diverse bodies and lived experiences.

Grounded in lived experience.

Focused on care, systems and change.

The BEAM lab is a hub for research on eating disorders, body image, and embodiment, grounded in lived and living experience and informed by trauma-aware, compassionate frameworks.

Our work examines how stigma, harm, and systemic pressures shape relationships with the body, and how systems of care can respond more safely, ethically, and effectively.

Lived experience at the centre

Lived and living experience is integrated at all stages of our research through co-design and co-production approaches.

From shaping research questions to interpreting findings and sharing outcomes, we work collaboratively to ensure our research is relevant, respectful, and meaningful.

Students as partners in research

The lab is a platform for student development and visibility. We actively support and showcase the work of Honours, Masters, and PhD researchers, recognising students as key contributors to high-quality, impactful research.

Through structured mentorship and collaborative research practice, the lab contributes to building research capacity and strengthening the future workforce in eating disorders and body image, including the development of research-informed clinicians.

From research to real-world impact

Our work is translational and outward-facing. Alongside peer-reviewed publications and participant recruitment, we collaborate with clinical, education, and industry partners to translate evidence into practice through tailored training, seminars, and consulting.

Led by psychologists who also work in clinical settings, the lab bridges research, training, and real-world care in the areas of eating disorders, body image, and mental health.

Aligned with national priorities

Our work aligns with national priorities in eating disorder research, prevention, and care, and is informed by collaboration with leading Australian organisations in the eating disorders sector.
